Im curious how it works.

There are two main different kinds of mods you will usually see and a few subsets and combinations of them.

There is the Entry Moderator, who is able to edit, confirm, deadpool, and delete entries, as well as remove images (edit: only sr. entry mods can do this) and edit descriptions of entries.

Then there is the Forum Moderator, who is able to lock threads, change options about them (such as when they autolock, if the OP can edit their post, if it is featured, that sort of thing), they can delete and edit other users' posts (to get rid of spam, porn, gore, etc), and they don't have a limit on when they can edit their own posts.

The Database Moderator is a combination of both of those, having the combined power of an entry moderator and a forum moderator.

Currently, Resident Advisors like OGW and Captain_Blubber are the same as Database Moderators, except they can ban users.

There are also Image Moderators, although they are less needed now that Entry Moderators can remove images also, but they still provide the important function of removing unrelated images, gore, and explicit images.

As to how you become one, you need to show exceptional interest in memes and helping this site, whether it be through helpful posts on the forums, lots of image uploads, cleaning and fixing of entries, or anything else beneficial to the website.

I believe they are chosen based on their work and help with the site. For example, I was chosen due to the number of memes I created and helped with, and I suppose Forum Mods are chosen based on their help in the forums, like responding to peoples messages and question politely and helpfully and so on.

What you do depends on your job. Entry Mods edit and work on other peoples memes (and create their own as well of course), to try and get them to a confirmable state, and deadpool and hide terrible/spam pages. Forum Mods can lock threads and should lock them if they’re either spam or pointless (and yet we never lock the Karma Whore thread, sigh) like when it just becomes arguments. They also advise people on what to do and just generally manage the forums to try and keep them quality (pffft, a hard job around here),

Oh, and the older mods can also ban members and remove images, but we can’t do that.

Nor does not mean and/or. Nor is used in a sentence when there is already a negative such as "not," "don't," etc, and you want to combine two ideas which are negatives (what a terrible explanation, I hope I'm doing this right).
Example: "This is not hard, nor is it easy."
What you were trying to do is combine two ideas into one sentence in which case you would use "and," "or," "but," "because," etc. If you wanted to say "and" and "or" just say "and/or."

Am I grammar nazing? Maybe, but you really confuse people when you use "nor" incorrectly.

Entry Moderator: For moderators with entry powers.
Forum Moderator: For moderators with forum powers.
Image Moderator: For moderators with image power.

• Custom titles will stay reserved for database moderators and staff

For those wondering who can and can't ban users, Database Moderators, Research Moderators, and "Sr." titles have that ability.

As for how you obtain these titles, they are assigned by the staff to the users who've shown that they can effectively utilize the abilities to manage the various sections of the site.

What we usually do: Act like everyone else.
What we do when we need to step in: Fix the problem.
What we're supposed to do: Manage the site.

So that's how it works. I hope this clears up any confusion.

Although the titles are mostly accurate, there are some weird oddities that aren't reflected in the title (such as banning, unlike what Shadowfury said, i think).

Come on guys. Being chosen as a mod isn't a race or something. Most of the time, Staff members are very busy discussing on who to pick up when it comes to new mods. It's not an easy choice.
Saying that you want to be one next won't help at all.

on another note, how does the ranking system work? (not mods) i am a gold member and i dont know how i got here, is it for my comments and pictures? and how do i rank up to researcher (which i heard is the highest rank before being a mod)

I do believe that the term DrThundercritic was looking for was “and/or”, which is a conjunction that I see used very seldom, despite its usefulness.

Now, to address your atrocious post (which I feel I must always do when I spot someone being a grammar Nazi and yet failing to use proper grammar in their post):

Your first sentence needs a period, even within parentheses.

"Nor" is the negative form of "or" and is usually preceded in a sentence by the word "neither" as in "This is neither hard nor is it easy." Note than in my explanation, the words I am explaining the meaning of have been enclosed in quotation marks to avoid confusion. This is not a hard-and-fast grammar rule, but it is highly encouraged, and is often known as "the use/mention distinction." Example: It's easier to understand the meaning of

It depends upon what the meaning of the word "is" is.

than

It depends upon what the meaning of the word is is.

unless you're a Republican, of course.

It's also important to specify (although most native speakers of English probably already understand this) that it's not quite when "you want to combine two ideas which are negatives" but rather that

Neither this nor that.

is equivalent to

Not this or that.

but different than

Not this and that.

which is a questionable grammatical construct anyway.

Since you put the phrase, "what a terrible explanation, I hope I’m doing this right" in parentheses in the midst of a larger sentence, you don't need to capitalize it nor* do you need a period, but since the phrase is made of two independent clauses, you have technically committed the sin of "comma splicing," and should have used a semicolon.

Final note: The term should be spelled "grammar Nazi-ing" as "Nazi" is a proper noun, and if you're using it as a present participle gerund, it tends to be the rule that neological constructs like this should be hyphenated, especially with a doubled vowel. Spelling it "grammar Naziing" might be semi-acceptable, but "grammar nazing" is definitely wrong, and I would suggest the better clarity of

Am I being a grammar Nazi?

The answer to the above question would be a clear, "Yes!"
