I think this is the result you get when you're adopting socially conservative values without the braggadocio to back you up. If you don't just come out swinging at every second of every day, or if your words burn more like acid than they burn like fire, people are gonna see you as some kinda weirdo and have a field day with it. It's a fine line to walk and it needs a balance of self-awareness, shamelessness, and ability to never slow down that only a handful of people can actually adopt. Trump's good at that, and basically every politico worth their salt has been saying it for the last eight years.
Somewhat unrelatedly, I do kinda wonder about the significance of all this. My take is that people who'd believe that JD Vance would have actually admitted to fucking a couch are a bit too credulous to be trusted with politics, and the people who "well, the fact that anyone would believe it" are annoying at best. The fact that people chose "couchfucker" as the joke to make for Vance, or "Zodiac Killer" as the joke to make for Cruz, however, says something. It's just that it s says more about how people see them than how they actually are.
Personally I just sorta get the feeling that Vance is an opportunist who wants power and acclaim, but got railroaded by techno-freaks and is starting to flounder as he's torn between a variety of camps and thus got shunted into a political Uncanny Valley.
