Here comes the age old question again: why was THIS user banned? (Edgar Weebling)

So an active participant of the 'Last Post Wins' forum thread and frequent image uploader has been found to be banned and that has some folks curious as to the reason why. My guess would've been he uploaded onto the site one too many lewds without the NSFW tag but that often comes with the consequence of getting suspended, not outright get hit with a ban.

What DID this man do? If any one of the mods care to shed some light on the matter of Edgar Weebling's ban, that would be much appreciated.

Just gonna throw this out in the air, but possible Alt maybe?

I sorta suspected he was Griff if anyone remembers him. Very similar interests and mannerisms, maybe some evidence linking the two was uncovered.

Idk, maybe just me being paranoid, but this wouldn't be the first case of a ban evader.

@Wilm210 and possible alt:

Wait,WHAT THE FUCK

That makes so much fucking sense.

There was a backend error that caused an issue that didn't let us detect some obvious alts. But yeah, the post attitude combined with the background information we have makes a lot of sense for Griff the Hoplite to be the same person as Edgar Weebling. Edgar's account was created a few months after Griff was banned too.

Would have made a lot of the issues that Edgar got in trouble for as well as borderline harassment of other members a lot easier to resolve had we known that instead of tying to tiptoe around it.

Looks like that anime avatar made me not even consider this possibility.

Edgar racked up 8 warnings (6 of them were specifically for improper tagging of NSFW). I was legit starting to question if they were doing this on purpose.

My suspension message not long after a warning in part read:

  • "Are you…trying to get banned? Like, I get that there is going to be disagreements on things, but this many [rule violations] in rapid succession like this… Most of your comments act like you just wanna chill but you keep doing this. You wanna talk about it?"*

Edgar's response back read:

  • "Normally, I would, but considering the very obvious bias present here, I don't think there is anything to discuss."

My response:

  • "the very obvious bias present here" refuses to elaborate further. Okay then… It might be better for both of us to try to understand one another, but If you don't want to talk I'm not going to make you. Take care.

Response to this PM read:

  • "Kups has done similar stuff multiple times and has been called out on it by others. (There's also been plenty of other users who have also done similar) and I have never seen any one of you suspend him or do anything about it. From the looks of it, you only responded to this because of the topic at hand in this thread. Also, don't mock me. It only makes things worse."

Also made this deleted wall vent post where they seemed to wallow in "how bad things were" but refused to do anything that might actually help anything
Edit: new embed

I didn't want this to follow them around so I didn't outright state it but… the unspecified user in this post who reported VeteranAdventureHobo because quote “they got some "hero complex" in proving people wrong in the comments to that entry” over actually doing research and showing multiple claims were unsupported or at least partially inaccurate was also Edgar. Actively harassing users for contributing to the site's goals and objectives and trying to get them in trouble for doing it is pretty bad. On top of this, there were other users who have vented about other comments and attitudes Edgar had. Nothing ban worthy, but these were users who had been on the site much longer, had contributed more to the site, and many in the site see them as the friendly users the site has.

The final bit was something I'm personally more soft on nowadays: softcore porn. I've seen how much the internet is becoming sanitized. Personally, as long as it isn't just a gif of two women shaking their butts uploaded to the gif gallery 'because it's a gif' and actually documenting something, then I'm not going to be the one to do something and just ignore it. Of course, I give this exact scenario because that's one of the images Edgar uploaded.

More importantly though, while I'm no longer the -Amish- prude I once was, other mods still are. If Edgar was a productive contributing member who I knew to be friendly and just made a good faith mistake, I might have objected a bit. But given numerous complaints, trying to get other users punished for doing what the site is supposed to be about, and a dismissive attitude for trying to talk… there wasn't a real reason for me to object to an otherwise unanimous decision of the mods online at the time to ban then.

Thanks for clarifying things, Jill. It's very much appreciated.
Sad to see the lad go, but if he was acting erratic behind the scenes I guess there isn't much else that could've been done. I'll share the info with the fellas at the 'Last Post Wins' thread.

I was wondering why he had suddenly disappeared from my friends list. From the conversations I had with him recently he seemed like a chill person and way more reasonable than many. It's a real shame to see him banned.

The one time I had an argument with the guy he said I had "extreme hatred making me see things" cause I didnt like some youtubers clickbaity content, so personally Idk about that

Even if we look past the user conflicts, passive aggressive nonsense posting, and shit-flinging (which we didn't), KYM used to operate on a 3-strike system. This rule never changed, the mod team has just grown much more lenient over time. Edgar had 8 strikes and a suspension. That's basically 3 bans, and that's terrible.

Please stop posting porn on KYM.

In light of the self-admitted leniency the mod team has, how many more "Weebling-like" cases do we have going on? Is this something the mods have gotten numb to over time considering the lack of manpower and the influx of seasonal weirdos that tend to pop up and cause their own brand of trouble?

I know for a fact the site moderation isn't in the best state it could be, so I'm curious if that could've influenced the situation we have here.

Ballpark estimate? Maybe between 10 and 20 big ones. Image feeds are easier to scroll, and KYM users are surprisingly good about reporting offending content for themselves. Sometimes this comes in the form of "if I was banned for X, why are THESE images still up?", but also a lot of good samaritans out there. We've yet to find a mod willing to sift through the decade+ of garbage and sort out what fits into our guidelines or not, so there's always some grey area – hence the leniency. Any user willing to do this please please please don't be afraid to.

The real failure on our part is in comments. The number of "orange circle" accounts, many of whom are likely alts (we see you), who pump out tens of comments a day with 75% downvote ratios is obscene. None of us are eager to scroll through 25 pages of comments on, say, the latest Israel-Palestine entry to weed out the bad ones, and when we do, it means the worst a user can get is one warn/suspend for all of the infractions we catch that day. In short, it means ill-behaved commenters get away with many more instances of rule-breaking behaviour than media uploaders do.

Thanks for the transparency. In the case of getting someone onboard for mod duties, is it that someone has come forth and contact you guys directly about that? Does nobody respond to public contests in the situation they get announced (like "open vacancies, apply here" type deal)?

How to make mods like you:

1. Join the Discord
2. Be a narc
3. Collect special mod appreciation tokens

No moderator status required, we will literally let anyone do this.

you mean I have to be DEA to get mod brownie points?
That seems a bit conveluted, I'll just be sarcastic, jokey and refrain from uploading lewds or saying actual inflammatory comments.
You guys can't ban me if I don't do anything ;)

Oh well it's sad to see him get banned, but I really don't like when users only post soft porn here instead of more interesting content. KYM is really not the right site for this kind of images.
Not sure what his problem was if he kept posting that stuff despite getting warned multiple times.

I recall the dude did have a passive-aggressive tone to his comments, but i didn't know about all of the mod antagonizing and nsfw shenanigans. It's like that other guy that has been spamming porn for years, some people just have too much time on their hands, and they use it to hold meaningless grudges.

In short, it means ill-behaved commenters get away with many more instances of rule-breaking behaviour than media uploaders do.

Wouldn't it be easier to handle if the site didn't lack a form of flagging malicious comments? Those tools could be misused and there's probably tons of technical reasons why it hasn't been done, but there just aren't any convenient ways for average users to point out the trash. Going by the percentage of downvotes is a poor metric, controversial topics drive a lot of the engagement and people are often downvoted for disagreeing with the majority.

I have requested this so, so many times over the years, but the most I've gotten was either a shrug, or some saying "the users will abuse it so we don't want to". I'm still trying to convince Don but I'm telling you, sometimes I feel like Sisyphus rolling that rock up a mountain

I thought he got for banned for something controversial or politics related but judging by the reasons given from Jill, it just seems like he simply suffered the same fate as Spaztastic man in posting way too risky NSFW.

At least with that answer, I can see him as a great guy who died doing what he loved instead of a dude exposed committing awful things. (then again, Mods here are incredibly petty so finding out an user is banned for legitimate reasons is pretty much a coin flip)

Jumped on the forum to look around when I saw he was banned, since he seemed to be a fairly frequent uploader. I did notice a few reposts, but didn't think that would be why. So, a combo of lewds and abrasiveness?

I didn't draw any connection between Griff and Edgar intially. Most of the obvious similarities between the two are shared among a majority of the active community members, so that didn't stick out to me. There's the fact that he spoke like a long time user despite being new, but that's hardly a rare sight here. If anything I thought they spoke a bit differently. Griff used WAY more exclamation points, for example.
Guess he had me fooled there.

Just speculatin, it's why I kept it to myself until now. Edgar reminded me of lot of Griff, but there isn't anything concrete linking the two so I may be talking out of my ass.

Both were very active vtuber uploaders, which itself isn't unusual, it's a popular gallery as you mentioned. However, a shared interest in uploading 2000's and older or vintage anime series is what ticked me off that they may be the same person. I too noticed Edgar showed up a few months after Griff was banned which I found suspicious. Lastly, both were very active in the Fun! forums. The forums in general aren't particularly all that popular, let alone that one.

As where they differed? I generally liked Griff, but he could be very hot-headed and argumentative. Griff made a habit of picking fights with several people he disagreed with in the unending cyclical culture war. Edgar did this too, but generally less so and seemed more relaxed, but I guess not going from what Jill said. Edgar was harassing other users alongside flagrantly ignoring warning for nsfw uploads.

Or I'm a stupid idiot who's reading too much into nothing and totally wrong which wouldn't surprise me.
