About

Fell Out of a Coconut Tree is an image macro series referencing a speech delivered by United States Vice President Kamala Harris in mid-May 2023. In the viral video, Harris continues by saying, "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you," seemingly making an existential point about happiness. The video went viral on Twitter / X, among other sites, in early 2024, due to numerous users labeling the video as "crazy."

Origin

On May 10th, 2023, the GOP War Room YouTube[1] account posted a video of American Vice President Kamala Harris delivering an anecdote about how her mother used to "give us a hard time" and say "I don't know what's wrong with you young people, you think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you." The video received roughly 23,000 views in four months (shown below).

I see what her mom was trying to say in the original context and it works there as a mother talking or venting to a child. Here as a woman in power trying to talk to most of a country about it's younger generation…. I don't think it works because it feels more like she's dumbing down everyone's issues. Sure some may not have it uh as bad as falling as a coconut tree, but some do live a crazy life that is just that.

How bothersome.
