Hoopla

About

Hoopla refers to edits of a SpongeBob SquarePants scene in which a fish is yelling the line "Hoopla!", making the narrator annoyed. The scene became a source of video remixes and YouTube Poops.

Origin

On May 10th, 2002, season 3, episode 50b of SpongeBob SquarePants, "Krusty Krab Training Video," premiered in the US.^[1] In the episode, the narrator attempts to say "Sounds like a bunch of hoopla," but a fish continually interrupts him by shouting "hoopla!" The fish then gets hit with a brick (scene shown below).

Spread

The scene later became a popular source of edits in the 2010s. For example, on August 8th, 2011, YouTube^[2] Bob Rynes uploaded a remix of the scene that received more than 2 million views in 12 years (shown below, left). On October 19th, 2017, YouTube^[3] user Marcalo uploaded an edit based on the scene and received more than 2 million views in 6 years (shown below, right).

On September 6th, 2018, YouTube^[4] user Homegrown uploaded the scene in 24 languages, receiving more than 3.1 million views in six years (shown below, left). On June 6th, 2021, YouTube^[5] user Variations Everything uploaded the scene with various sound effects. The video received more than 1.7 million views in three years (shown below, right).
