About
Kamala Harris Holding A Vinyl Record refers to an exploitable image and meme format of Vice President Kamala Harris showing off a vinyl record she had just purchased. In July 2024, the year-old image saw life as a meme as social media users replaced the album artwork with various record covers. It also inspired the creation of a generator to help facilitate the creation of more memes.
Origin
On May 9th, 2023, Kamala Harris went to HR Records in Washington D.C. as part of a show of support for Small Business Week.[1] She posted a video of her leaving the store and showing off her purchases for waiting reporters. They included records by jazz musicians Charles Mingus, Roy Ayers, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. The video gained over 1,100 retweets and 7,700 likes in one year (shown below).

Spread
The video did not inspire memes until July 2024 when it recirculated[2] as Harris became the presumptive Democratic nominee for President in the 2024 Presidential Election. One of the earliest known edits of Kamala holding a vinyl was posted on July 23rd, 2024, by Twitter / X user mypalfootfoot7,[3] who edited it to show Harris holding an album by The Fall, gaining over 200 retweets and 1,200 likes in six days (shown below, left).
On July 25th, Redditor achmejedidad posted an edit of Harris holding "Messiah" by Konflict in /r/DnB,[4] gaining over 290 points in four days (shown below, right).
On July 26th, 2024, Twitter user @said_mitch created a generator[5] for the creation of similar memes. The generator requires users to type in the name of any album on Spotify, and that album populates in Harris' hand. This greatly facilitated the creation of more edits of the image.
For example, on July 27th, Redditor RFever posted an edit of Harris holding a picture of the 1998 Godzilla soundtrack, gaining over 190 points in /r/Godzillamemes[6] in two days (shown below, left). The same day, Twitter user @BarbaraYetaxa[7] posted an edit of Harris holding the soundtrack to Doctor Who, gaining over 220 retweets and 3,800 likes in two days (shown below, right).
