About

That Casually Misogynistic Remark refers to a comic panel by artist Ashmatics in which their trusted male friend makes a "casually misogynistic remark," with the remark itself blurred in the comic. Online, the panel gained popularity as an exploitable meme format with users editing various remarks into the speech bubble the male friends could have possibly said.

Origin

On June 17th, 2024, webcomic artist @ashmatics posted a 10-panel comic to X[1] titled "I forgot you were a man" in which they relayed a story of bonding with a male friend and forgetting about his gender until he made a "casually misogynistic remark," which caught the author of the comic off guard (first and second panels of the comic shown below, top and bottom).

I FORGOT YOU WERE A MAN FOR A MOMENT.

I MEAN IT'S NOT LIKE I DIDN'T KNOW. I KNEW. I JUST... BLAH BLAH BLA BLAH BLAH NEVER GAVE IT MUCH THOUGHT.

In the seventh panel of the comic, the male friend makes a certain misogynistic remark, with the words they said blurred in the comic. The panel (shown below) garnered over 650 reposts and 20,000 likes on X[2] in one day.

SO IT WAS STRANGE TO ME WHEN YOU SAID IT... THAT CASUALLY MISOGYNISTIC REMARK.

Spread

Starting on June 18th, 2024, users on X posted edits of the panel, replacing the blurred text with various remarks that the man might have said. For example, on June 18th, X[3] user @turbocket posted a Women Be Shopping edit that received over 10 reposts and 480 likes in one day (shown below, left).

Later that day, X[4] user @zayunderworld posted a version referencing an Adult Swim Smalls Presents joke that garnered over 420 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

Also on June 18th, 2024, X[5] user @BitchingBurner posted a reconstructed version of the original panel, revealing that the blurred remark was likely "We broke up. I couldn't get her to do anything with me" (shown below).

How much do you want to bet that the supposed "misogynistic remark" is not misogynistic at all, but the author believes it to be thanks to consuming too much ideological brainrot?
