About

You Kinda Smell Like A Baka Eren Yeager refers to an original sound on TikTok consisting of someone sniffing the air then reading the titular phrase in a childish, high-pitched cadence. The sound trended in August 2021 and is used in various lip-dub and skit videos. “Baka” is Japanese for "fool" and "Eren Yeager" is a character from the anime series Attack On Titan.

Origin

The first video associated with the "you smell like a baka" original sound[1] was uploaded by TikToker[7] @rrraandomm on June 28th, 2021. In the video, the TikToker is playing the mobile karaoke game Smule with TikToker @kiszuko1. Before the song starts, @rrraandomm says "I don't know what I'm doing," then a voice sniffs and says in a high-pitched voice "you kinda smell like a baka Eren Yeager." This is attached to the original audio on Smule.[8] @Kiszuko then begins to sing. The video gained over 3 million views in three months (shown below).

The song in the background of the sound is "Love Like You" from the Steven Universe soundtrack.

Spread

One of the earliest videos to use the sound is an animation interpreting the scene, which was uploaded by TikToker @tankmikeee on July 27th, 2021, gaining over 550,000 views in three weeks (shown below).

The sound continued to see use throughout late July and August 2021, seeing a notable increase in interest in mid-August. Some TikTokers noted an oddly satisfying quality in the way the word "baka" is spoken in the audio.

On August 7th, TikToker[2] @bokutosthickleftasscheek posted a video interpreting the sound with a doll of Sabito from Demon Slayer, asking viewers to send the video to someone special, throwing the doll when the audio reads "like a baka," gaining over 1.4 million views in two weeks (shown below, left). This inspired other TikTokers to use anime dolls in similar videos, showing the doll soaring through the air at "like a baka," including TikToker[3] @the.lil.drago_ on August 14th in a video gaining over 4.2 million views in five days (shown below, right).

The original sound has been used over 9,800 times as of August 19th and appears to be steadily growing as of the same date. On August 18th, Redditor u/KalypsoXD posted an image to /r/Genshin_memepact,[6] a Genshin Impact meme forum, interpreting the sound like a text exchange, gaining over 2,000 upvotes that day (shown below).

Baka

Baka is a Japanese word that directly translates to "fool" or any of its synonyms such as "idiot" and "moron." Online, the pejorative term has been used both ironically and unironically by Otakus and its detractors poking fun at anime culture alike.

Sussy Baka

Sussy Baka, made up of the terms "sussy," meaning suspicious (often associated with Among Us) and "baka," meaning "fool" in Japanese, refers to a number of videos by TikToker Akeam Francis in which he says variations of the phrase, "you're such a sussy baka." A number of Francis' videos have inspired popular Original Sounds on TikTok and seen use in video edits and memes across social media platforms, becoming a well-known catchphrase on its own.
