About

YoutubePoop refers to randomly edited Youtube videos that feature the initialism YTP in the title. These videos are made of various editing techniques, including appropriated footage and collage, to create purposely annoying videos that delight those who make them and irritate those tricked into watching.

Origin

On December 22nd, 2004, YouTuber SuperYoshi published what is considered by some to be the first YouTube Poop video under the title "Recycled Koopah." Two years later, on November 27th, 2006, SuperYoshi posted the video on YouTube with the title "I'D SAY HE'S HOT ON HOUR TRAIL." The video received more than 427,000 views in less than 15 years (shown below).

Spread

Throughout the 2000s, YouTube Poop was a popular genre of video on the site, usually piecing together footage from video games and/or children's television adaptations of video games. These included many references to the Super Mario Bros. Super Show and the Zelda CD-i games from the late 80s and early 90s. For example, on April 29th, 2007, YouTuber Jeff Lindbolm posted the video "Youtube Poop – What is Spaghetti?" The video, which features footage from the Zelda CD-i games, received more than 1.9 million views in less than 14 years (shown below, left).

On November 11th, 2009, YouTuber Hurricoaster posted one of the most-viewed YouTube Poops in the site's history, "YouTube Poop: The Sky Had A Weegee!" The post features imagery from several children's franchises, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Super Mario Bros. and Pokémon. The post received more than 17 million views in less than 12 years (shown below, right).

In 2009, the first episode of YouTube Poop News debuted on YouTube (shown below, left). On the show, host Stuart K Reilly discussed various YouTube Poopers and editing techniques. The show ran with a series of hosts until 2011 (example below, right) .

While the form wained in popularity in the 2010s, some videos managed to receive millions of views. On March 29th, 2017, YouTuber A Knight's Night! published the most viewed YouTube Poop on the site, "ScareTube Poop: Slendybob 3 – Silence of the Fish," which received more than 36 million views (shown below).

Poopisms

There are a number of techniques commonly employed by YouTube Poopers, called Poopisms. These do not refer to what the source material is, but rather, how it has been manipulated. Some examples of Poopisms are:

  • Ear Rape: Volume is maxed out and distorted. The intention is generally to annoy.
  • Stutter Loop: A short piece of video is looped in order to call attention or emphasize something.
  • Word Trim/sentence mix: Words are cut and rearranged, often to create profanity.
  • YTPMV (Classic): A sample is sequenced to an audio track to vaguely simulate something like "singing."
  • YTPMV: Notes in source materials are pitch shifted to create a song.

Various Examples

YTPMV Soccer

A YTPMV Soccer is a battle between two or more people attempting to make the best YTPMVs possible. Opponents decide who will go first and how many rounds are going to be in the game. After a YTPMV is posted, then the next opponent has to use the same video source or song to make the next YTPMV. This process repeats. Normally people put their rounds as responses to the previous round’s video to tell people when the next round is supposed to be started.

YTP Tennis

YTP Tennis is similar to YTPMV Soccer, but has fewer rules, uses more Poopisms and consists out of making a YouTube Poop out of the previous round. Depending on the kind of tennis, adding sources to the next round may or may not be allowed.

Just another person dropping by to say this article needs an updating. Youtube Poop isn't always about annoying the viewer. It is sometimes the funniest content on the internet, full stop. The PBS Idea channel also took a look at it as valid artistic medium. It will never go away, so long as there is editing software and a significant amount of time on someone's hands.
