Boots and a Slick Back Bun, continued Cowboy Boots and a Blowie, Sambas and a Little Red Bag, refers to a TikTok trend started by a viral video uploaded by TikToker @maisieisobel_ in mid-2024, showing her and two friends singing about their outfits and looks, combining two characteristics in an original song. Others on the app and Instagram used the video format with their friends going into July 2024, including celebrities like Amy Poehler, Rachel Dratch, Rashida Jones and Seth Meyers, whose iteration was called Hoops and a Black Short Dress. The Gen Z Boss and a Mini video is another example of the trend. It was posted by the Instagram account tbh skincare (@tbhskincare_) and was labeled cringe in reactions, discourse and memes on Twitter / X.
Origin
On June 29th, 2024, TikToker[1] @maisieisobel_ posted a video of her and two friends outside at night singing about their outfits and looks. They each sang a verse in the same rhythm, including, "Boots and a slick back bun," "Cowboy boots and a blowie" and "Sambas and a little red bag." Over 13 days, the video received roughly 7 million plays and 951,900 likes (shown below).

Others on the platform added to the trend going into July 2024. For instance, on July 1st, 2024, TikToker[2] @laurencosier posted an iteration with her friends, receiving over 3.4 million plays and 555,600 likes in 10 days (shown below, left).
On July 5th, TikToker[3] @dosyes posted a video that used the original TikTok sound,[4] gaining over 2.3 million plays and 228,500 likes in six days (shown below, right).

Amy Poehler's "Hoops And A Black Short Dress"
On July 10th, 2024, actress Amy Poehler posted a TikTok[5] in which she and fellow actresses Rachel Dratch and Rashida Jones did the trend, using the verses, "Hoops and a black short dress," "Pony and a cashmere shirt" and "Sambas and a little blue bag." Also, fellow former SNL cast member Seth Meyers is seen walking in the background. In a day, the video amassed over 21.8 million plays and 4 million likes (shown below, left).
TikTokers made a green-screen template with Poehler's video on July 10th, used by TikToker[6] @ferreroroshelle on the day, who added text reading, "me mentally planning out which outfits to pack for vacation," receiving over 2.2 million plays and 275,800 likes in a day (shown below, right).

Gen Z Boss And A Mini
Gen Z Boss and a Mini is a viral video posted by the Instagram account tbh skincare (@tbhskincare_) in July 2024 in which several Gen Z women are singing an original song following the Boots and a Slick Back Bun trend. The Gen Z Boss and a Mini video was labeled cringe by many Instagram and Twitter / X users when it was reposted with the question, "Is this the longhouse?" Discourse and memes about the video often centered on the Gen Z women exhibiting so-called "Millennial cringe."
